He spent 17 seasons in the major leagues with the Red Sox, Indians, Senators, Mets, and Angels, while building a reputation as an excellent center fielder and a unique personality. Piersall finished his career with a .272 batting average, 1,604 hits, 104 home runs, and 591 RBI. He was a two-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner, and he was known for his energy, defense, and unforgettable moments on the field. His career also carried a deeper importance because of his public struggle with mental illness, which made him a significant figure beyond baseball.
