FACTS:
- Dave Concepcion was considered by many to be the best SS of the 1970s. He formed with the Hall of Fame member Joe Morgan one of the best middle-infield combinations of their era.
- He followed the footsteps of great Venezuelan Shortstops (and his heroes) Luis Aparicio and Chico Carrasquel.
- In 1975 he joined Johnny Bench (C), Tony Perez (1B), Joe Morgan (2B), Pete Rose (3B), Ken Griffey Sr. (OF), Cesar Geronimo (OF) and George Foster (OF) in the "Great Eight" (the starting lineup of the "Big Red Machine" that would win the World Series in 1975 and 1976).
- In 1981 Dave Concepcion and George Foster became the first Reds players to ever receive the Silver Slugger Award.
- In 1984 he became the third Reds Captain until his retirement in 1988.
- Because of his age, an elbow injury and a shoulder surgery in 1982 Concepcion had subpar seasons until he was substituted in the SS by the future Hall of Fame member Barry Larkin in 1986. Concepcion then played in all four infield positions.
- In 2000 he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame; and in 2007 the team retired Concepcion's number 13.
- Dave Concepcion ranks second in Reds history in career Games and At-Bats; third in Hits, 2B and SB; and fifth in Runs and Total Bases. He and Larkin share the franchise record with 19 seasons with the team.
