Poster: Fernando Valenzuela

Fernando Valenzuela was one of the most beloved pitchers of his era and one of the most important Latino stars in baseball history. He broke into the majors with the Dodgers and quickly became a sensation, thanks to his unique delivery, excellent pitching, and the excitement he brought to every start.

Valenzuela spent the majority of his career with the Dodgers, and also pitched for the Angels, Orioles, Phillies, Padres, and Cardinals. He finished his Major League Baseball career with 173 wins, a 3.54 ERA, and 2,074 strikeouts, and he became a six-time All-Star along the way.

One of the highlights of his career came on June 29, 1990, when he threw a no-hitter for the Dodgers against the Cardinals. Beyond the numbers, Valenzuela helped spark one of the greatest waves of fan excitement in modern baseball, and “Fernandomania” remains one of the sport’s most memorable phenomena.
